Kuo: Apple will launch its AR/VR headset next year with ‘Mac-level’ power

Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims Apple’s long-rumoured AR/VR headset will debut next year with “Mac-level” power.

A research note from Kuo seen by MacRumours suggests the device will feature two processors to support its capabilities.

One processor is said to be similar to Apple’s debut in-house silicon, the M1. This chip will handle the device’s more demanding tasks.

A second, lower-end processor will be used to handle sensor...

Benchmark shows the M1 Max GPU is over 3x faster than M1

Early benchmarks show the large performance jump of Apple’s latest and greatest in-house silicon.

Those folks with large enough wallets to afford the M1 Max-packing MacBook Pro will be rewarded with impressive performance.

“M1 has transformed our most popular systems with incredible performance, custom technologies, and industry-leading power efficiency. No one has ever applied a system-on-a-chip design to a pro system until today with M1 Pro and M1 Max,” said...

Developers appear to be losing interest in macOS

Analysis conducted by Appfigures suggests that developers are losing interest in macOS.

The number of Mac app releases has been on a steady decline for years, but Appfigures has noted a rapid decrease in recent months that shows no sign of slowing:

In 2020, developers released 392 apps on average per month. In 2021, that’s dropped to 343 per month.

Appfigures isn’t too optimistic about the outlook going forward and forecasts a drop to the low 200s for...

Apple restricts M1 iPad Pro apps to 5GB RAM each

Apple is limiting apps for the new M1 iPad Pro to 5GB RAM each, despite some configurations now featuring 16GB.

The latest iPad is another step towards becoming a true laptop replacement, at least in terms of pure hardware. In fact, it’s the first iPad to feature the same desktop-class M1 processor that Apple is now using across its latest Mac lineup.

While the iPad continues to boast impressive hardware, the software continues to be held back through an OS which –...

Mac Apps Report arms developers with useful consumer insights

Setapp has released its first Mac Apps Report which provides developers with useful insights into consumer attitudes.

When it comes to one-off purchases versus subscriptions, over double prefer to pay for a lifetime license (36%) compared to an ongoing fee (14%). However, 38 percent selected the “it depends” answer which indicates some flexibility for the right app.

Interestingly, 58 percent of respondents at least somewhat agreed with the statement that they prefer...

Linus Torvalds wants an M1 Mac… but running Linux, obviously

Linux creator Linus Torvalds wants one of Apple’s first machines using in-house silicon—but running his open-source OS.

In a response to a Q&A in which a user asked Torvalds what he thought of Apple’s new laptop, Torvalds wrote:

“I'd absolutely love to have one, if it just ran Linux.. I have fairly fond memories of the 11" Macbook Air (I think 4,1) that I used about a decade ago (but moved away from because it took Apple too long to fix the screen - and by...
